2002 AWARDS CONTEST

DEADLINE EXTENDED
Now October 15, 2002

NYABJ will honor outstanding news coverage of issues concerning
blacks at its 15th annual scholarship and awards dinner
 on Wednesday, December 11, 2002
 at Columbia University's Roone Arledge Auditorium.

CONTEST APPLICATION

Entries may be submitted in the following categories:

  • Newspaper
    Circulation over 150,000
    Circulation under 150,000
  • Print Photojournalism (Slides only)
  • Radio
  • Television
  • Magazine
  • Online

The Griot Award, NYABJ's highest and most exclusive citation,
 will be presented for work deemed especially exceptional.

RULES

1. Entries can be a single article or broadcast, series or part of a series.
All submissions should indicate clearly the appropriate news categories:

  • Spot/General
  • International
  • General Features
  • Arts and Entertainment
  • Sports
  • Business/Technology
  • Documentary
  • Science (Health, Medical, Environmental Reporting, etc.)
  • Personal Commentary
  • News Commentary (Op-ed Columns, Topical Essays, etc.)
  • Public Affairs

2. Entries must be published or broadcast between September 1, 2001 and August 31, 2002.
3. Entries may not be submitted in more than one category.
4. All qualified entries will be considered for Griot Awards. Separate submissions are not required.
5. Entries may be submitted by an individual journalist or a single newsroom contest coordinator.

6. Entries must include a brief statement of merit on the significance and impact of the work and a list of primary reporters, editors, producers, photojournalists and others involved in the work.
7. The contest fee is $35 per entry. A series submitted in one category requires one fee. NYABJ members who provide proof of 2002 membership (photocopy of membership card is sufficient) may submit one entry fee. Checks for submissions and membership should be made payable to NYABJ. Membership dues are $50 for professional journalists and $10 for students with current ID.
8. Entries must be postmarked no later than September 30, 2002 and must include name, position, address, day and evening phone numbers, station or publication name and publication or broadcast date. Please include an e-mail address, if available.

Broadcast Entries

1. Radio and television entries can be single stories, documentaries, special reports, a series or parts of a series. The length of each must be specified. For radio entries, submit two copies of each tape. For television entries, submit two copies of VHS tapes.
2. Documentaries should not exceed one hour, regardless of total broadcast length.

Newspaper and Magazine Entries

1. Submit five photocopies of each entry and five copies of the merit statement.
2. Series submissions should not exceed five individual articles.
3. Samplers will not be considered a series. A sampler of five random stories should be submitted as five separate entries.

Print Photojournalism Entries

1. Photo slides may be in color or black and white.
2. Submit three copies of the published work. Photocopies of tear sheets are acceptable.

Online Entries

1. Submit five photocopies of the downloaded pages of each entry and five copies of the merit statement.
2. Series submissions should not exceed five individual articles.
3. Online entries cannot be work already printed or broadcast then posted on that same news organization's Web site. It must be work originating online.
