Shared Interest
- Summer 2003 Internship
Shared Interest is a not-for-profit social investment fund designed to enhance low-income South Africans' access to credit denied them because of their race, gender, HIV status or income. Shared Interest helps to guarantee South African bank loans to community development financial institutions engaged in South Africa's reconstruction process. These guarantees enable economically marginalized South Africans in townships, rural, and urban areas to become increasingly self-sufficient as they try to build homes, small businesses and develop constructive new relationships with South African financial institutions.

Summer 2003 interns will help Shared Interest to forge partnerships with communities seeking to be part of the exciting nation building process under way in post-apartheid South Africa. Interns will play a role in helping to mobilize US support for grassroots economic development in South Africa. Shared Interest can provide interns with opportunities to/for exposure to a dynamic and growing international partnership, hone and upgrade media/communications skills, play an assistive role in creating and planning media outreach.

Background:

Shared Interest is a social investment program that raises grants and loan capital for community economic development in South Africa. Shared Interest works through its South African partner, the Thembani International Guarantee Fund, to provide technical and financial assistance to grassroots not-for-profit organizations that extend credit for very small businesses and low-cost housing to borrowers denied loans because of their race, HIV status, gender and income levels. In this way, Shared Interest provides an opportunity for U.S.supporters to participate in South Africa's democratic and equitable reconstruction.

Shared Interest is enhancing the quality and continuity of its work across communities. As such, a need has evolved for a dynamic intern to assist the organization in its development of a media, advertising and general communications plan which would include: researching advertising outlets for priority audiences, producing generic press materials for media kits, helping to launch an e-newsletter, enhancing the scope of media contacts, upgrading the media database, cultivating and placing articles across media outlets, and contributing to the development of a dynamic marketing/press and fundraising campaign.

The Internship:

  • Interns participate in Shared Interest's day-to-day operations, including enhancement of electronic and surface communication strategies.
  • Contributes to the preparation of brochures, marketing documents, annual reports and Shared Interest's newsletter.
  • Contributes to the development of a dynamic marketing/press and fundraising campaign.
  • Assists in researching and upgrading Shared Interest's media database.
  • Assists in forging communications strategies to build Shared Interest's partnerships with organizations interested in South Africaand equitable economic development.
  • Assists in organizing Shared Interest's special events, which range from house parties to larger receptions and other public programs.
  • Update media lists, building the database, assisting in the development of press kits..

Requirements: The ideal intern candidate will either have completed at least 4 semesters (or 30 credit/unit hours) of undergraduate course work, or completed a B.A. degree, with a Masters degree in progress in one of the following areas: International Relations, International Finance, Media/Communications, Journalism, African Studies, Ethnic Studies, International Social Welfare, Public Policy, Urban Planning. Related areas of study or interest are welcome. Effective organizational, interpersonal and communications skills as well as familiarity with computers (including MS Word, Outlook, Macromedia Dreamweaver, PowerPoint, Photoshop, Publisher) and database software (ACCESS or Donor Perfect) is highly preferred. The Intern should also be committed to social justice issues and have an interest in African development. S/he should be an energetic team player and self-starter with an ability to work cooperatively toward the aim of contributing to the economic reconstruction of South Africa.

Shared Interest welcomes candidates of diverse backgrounds to join us in our exciting and rewarding work.

Start Date: June 9, 2003
End Date: August 22, 2003

I and I Exchange, a newsmagazine program dedicated to Caribbean women and interests, is currently seeking volunteers for the 28-minute program aired bi-monthly on BCAT (Brooklyn Community Access Television). We are looking for both on-air talent and crewmembers. Caribbean women are sought for all reporting and hosting positions. As host, you would be responsible for interviewing program guests and other general hosting duties. Reporters would pitch and develop story ideas relevant to its particular segment and, depending on the segment, appear on camera. All crew members must be BCAT studio certified producers. We are currently looking for a teleprompter and character generator operator. We are also looking for editors (iMovie, Final Cut Pro) and camera people (preferably owns their camera). Editors and camera people do not require BCAT certification.

I and I Exchange is the product of a conversation between to Caribbean women journalists who were searching for programming that centered on us and our issues and interests. Not having found that program, I and I Exchange was created in 2000 and is now airing on BCAT in an attempt to educate, enlighten and empower Caribbean women through programming that reflects them and expose those outside our target audience to the issues and achievements of Caribbean women.
