Among its many programs and activities, NYABJ holds professional development seminars, panel discussions on issues of interest to the black community, workshops for high school students, awards competitions to recognize excellence in journalism, and fund raisers to provide scholarships for aspiring journalists. To date, the chapter has given more than $55,000 in scholarships to area students. NYABJ has also sponsored regional NABJ conferences as well as press conferences and news briefings with newsmakers.

As with most volunteer organizations, much of our work is done by dedicated members serving on committees. NYABJ's committees are Membership, Media Watch, Scholarship/Student Outreach, Programs, Communications, Newsletter, Awards, Web Site and Fund Raising.

The committees are led by the following leaders:

Scholarship/Student Outreach
Saundra Booker
Administers the annual scholarship and essay competition, works with the Fund Raising Committee to raise scholarship money, and solicits applications from journalism students and instructors within the New York college community. The committee also administers the annual high school journalism workshop.

Media Watch
Eric Tait and Agnes Green
Coordinates efforts to sensitize the media to institutional racism in coverage of news events, to expand coverage of the black community in America and abroad, and to monitor and seek compliance with existing EEOC and FCC laws.

Programs
Elisa Keys and Zachary Dowdy
Coordinates programs - including but not limited to professional development and African-Caribbean outreach - for the monthly meetings and special events.

Membership
Keesa Schreane and Frankie Edozien
Conducts membership recruitment efforts and related activities while maintaining a current record of active members and welcoming new black journalists to the area.

Publicity
Anayo Afolabi and Zita Allen
Publicizes NYABJ events and activities, submits information to the NABJ Journal and generates news articles featuring NYABJ programs and initiatives.

Awards
Mira Lowe
Organizes and facilitates the chapter's annual journalism awards competition. The awards are presented at a scholarship and awards dinner each December.

Fund Raising
Coordinates money-making events for NYABJ and writes for grants and sponsorship.

Newsletter
Feona Huff
Coordinates and produces a quarterly newsletter which supports and publicizes the functions of NYABJ and its membership.

Web Site
Herbert Lowe and Alana Robinson
Keeps NYABJ members advised of advances in news technologies and provides information on better ways to use the Internet and computer-based tools. The committee also manages the chapter Web site, www.nyabj.org.

Any NYABJ member interested in joining a committee should contact one of the leaders or Chapter President Errol Cockfield.
