FIRST TAKE seeks a dynamic, organized, and innovative journalism director(s) for the fall 2019 semester at CUNY J-School every Saturday for 6 weeks beginning in late September early October.

Established in 1988, FIRST TAKE is a free six-week high school journalism workshop sponsored by The New York Association of Black Journalists and hosted by CUNY Graduate School of Journalism.
Students accepted into the program will learn to write and report news stories, shoot and edit video, produce a TV newscast, and learn how to use social media to support their local news coverage. Participants will also be paired with a mentor.
 
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
 
·       Plans, prepares and facilitates a six-week curriculum that exposes students to a variety of writing forms and styles and teaches them how to tell a story with photos, video and sound.
·       Has knowledge and understanding of effective teaching practices for high school age students.
·       Takes a balanced approach to teaching journalism with the goal that students become independent and capable researchers, writers, editors, and understand how to pitch a story and take a multimedia approach to storytelling.
·       Establishes a culture of learning to engage students and creates a classroom environment of respect and rapport to ensure a safe, caring and orderly environment which nurtures the unique needs of each student.
·       Creates ongoing communication with families, guardians, and caregivers to enhance student development and success.
 
 
QUALIFICATIONS:
·       Broad knowledge of journalism and of techniques for teaching reporting, writing, editing, fact-checking, video production, photography and video editing.
·       Bachelor’s degree is required
·       Clearance for fingerprint and a criminal background check
