NYABJ's Year So Far

Just joined NYABJ?
Or maybe you haven't been paying as much attention as you'd like?
Well, here's what you might have missed so far in 2002.

March 22 - Brothers Back to School
Each year, in a companion program to "Take Our Daughters to Work Day," many NYABJ members go into area schools to talk about what they do each day at work. If you would like to volunteer, contact Daphne Young, co-chairwoman of the Scholarship/Student Outreach Committee. Learn more and submit an application today.

March 21- Lunch with New York University Students
NYU’s office for African American, Latino, and Asian American Student Services and the Washington Square News, the daily student newspaper, have been coordinating "Making it in Media" -- a conversation series featuring media professionals of color. Media professionals come, have lunch with a small group of students, and share work experiences. We are inviting you to join us from noon to 2 p.m. Topics range from different mediums (newspaper, print, television, online), internship and career advice, and the like. If you’re interested, please contact Gretchen Weber at gew208@nyu.edu or call (781) 223-0771.

March 20 - Dialogue with Mayor Michael Bloomberg
New York City's mayor will join NYABJ for a discussion moderated by NY1 Political Anchor/Reporter Dominic Carter at WNBC-TV, 30 Rockefeller Plaza (Mezzanine Level). The event is scheduled from 5:30 to 8 p.m. and will be followed by a reception. Please arrive early as seating will be limited. RSVP: nyabj@yahoo.com (Also, check out an earlier meeting between the mayor and black journalists.)

March 5, 7 & 14 - Book Publishing Seminar
Juliette Fairley, author of Cash in the City: Affording Martinis, Manolos and Manicures on a Working Girl's Salary (Wiley, Feb. 2002) is hosting a three-day Get Published! non-fiction book publishing seminar.
On March 5, we will have a top NYC agent come guest lecture and take verbal pitches of your non-fiction ideas. On March 7, we will discuss writing query letters and book proposals to send to agents. On March 14, an editor from St. Martin's Press will guest lecture about fiction and non-fiction book publishing. The three evenings begin at 7 p.m. and end at 8:30 p.m. and meet near 21st Street and 5th Avenue in Manhattan. Interested NYABJ members can contact Juliette at (212) 714-7723 or visit www.cashinthecity.com.

March 2 - Tips for Freelancers
Writer Allen Salkin (New York Times, Details, People) will show you how to convince editors who've never heard of you to give you an assignment. Make the most of that first minute -- in person or on the page -- to explain what you're writing about and why our story is perfect for the magazine, newspaper, Web site or newsletter you're pitching.
