Planning
for NYABJ's 12th annual high school
journalism workshop, one of the
chapter's premier programs, is underway.
The workshop, which has produced
some of the country's best young
journalists, is held on consecutive
Saturdays each spring at Long Island
University's Brooklyn campus.
Students produce an amateur newscast,
"NYABJ Action News," with
the entire group acting in different
capacities from anchors to field
reporters; and a newspaper, "First
Take," in which each student
produces two articles and takes
photos. Guided by media professionals
and potential mentors, the students
improve their writing and articulation
skills as well as news judgment.
As
an added bonus, the student who
earns the highest grades on news
quizzes will receive a PDA, and
each week, the student who receives
the highest grade for the day will
get miscellaneous gifts such as
mugs, CDs, etc. Students will take
at least one field trip to a major
news organization, and when the
workshop concludes, receive recognition
during a ceremonial brunch.
Anyone
interested in participating or volunteering
as a mentor please contact Joy
Armstrong, co-chair of the chapter's
Scholarship/Student
Outreach Committee.
